Pairing with Virgin Galactic, Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line has developed the first ever apparel collection built for space. Sports brands have forever looked towards technology in order to improve themselves, their designs, and ultimately, their consumers. Making them stronger, faster, and go further. Now, they're looking into going the furthest possible distance - into space. Or more specifically, exactly what sort of apparel they can dress them in for the voyage.

Joining forces with the Virgin Galactic enterprise, Yohji Yamamoto and adidas' brand Y-3 has conceived the first-ever collection designed for space. Revealed at Spaceport America in New Mexico, the range includes a prototype flight-suit and boots to be worn by Virgin Galactic's pilots, which is to be the first commercial venture into space.

The all-in-one flight suit is constructed from a heat-resistant synthetic material called Nomex Meta Aramid, which is woven using a 3D-engineered pattern. Tailored to support the pilot's seating position, the suit zips up the front of the torso and also opens up at the shins, and it's been rigorously tested by the pilot corps. "The pilot flight-suit prototype that we have developed truly represents both of our brands and, more importantly, will ensure comfort, functionality and support for the pilots of the world's first commercial space flights," said Y-3 senior design director Lawrence Midwood.

The accompanying flight boots feature a leather and Nomex construction with a special TRAXION outsole that provide unparalleled grip and an adiPRENE heel insert for ultimate comfort and shock absorption.

Pilots will begin trialling the collection during Virgin Galactic's test programme in order to allow Y-3 to tweak the pieces in response to the pilot's feedback. With technological advancements increasingly integrated into our everyday clothing, will it be long before we experience these optimised garments in our own wardrobes?
