As light shows enthusiasts, we were very excited to find out about Max Hattler’s latest animation presented at the King’s Cross Filling Station. Entitled X, the kinetic art work offers onlookers a whole different dramatic experience by projecting hypnotizing neon shapes on a 10x15 metre hydro screen.

Referring to the concept behind the project, Hattler said “The starting point for me was oil and water, referencing Regent’s Canal and the history of KXFS as a petrol station. Oil and water as essential opposing elements struggling for balance. This then developed more broadly into ideas around visualising the balancing of different elements within a system. The end result of the work is completely abstracted into the kinetic relationships of basic shapes, the movement and energy balances of geometric systems.”

Coupled with music by Eduardo Noya Schreushe, the geometric laser ballet spellbinds the viewers and teleports them into a sci-fi atmosphere.

The project is another interesting auto installation (like Hyper-Matrix, for example) - the kinetic art work has been commissioned by Vauxhall Motors, as part of a series of six cultural events celebrating the launch of the electric car, Vauxhall Ampera.

X by Max Hattler is on show at the KXFS every hour between 8pm-10pm until September 16.
