WikiHouse is an Open Community project that lets people construct their own buildings. Using the website, a person can download designed house components that have been shared by the creative community. These models are then used by WikiHouse to create drawings in the Google Sketchup program to be cut into house parts by a CNC cutter, a numerical control tool that automatically cuts 3D wooden models generated from computer drawings. The parts can also be customised within Google Sketchup, granting users total creative freedom in the outcome of their structure. Once this process is complete, the parts can then be assembled like a layered jigsaw. Houses can be built at affordable prices, and no power tools are required, meaning this hassle-free system can be used by people who are inexperienced in the field of construction. Watch the assembly of the prototype here, which from concept to execution took just 24 hours. The first WikiHouse will be constructed in South Korea at the Gwangju Design Biennale 2011. The innovative concept opens opportunities to the public to experiment with building their own personalised structures without the need for prior training or formal skills.
