We’ve seen a lot of recent focus on changing the packaging of various products over the last few months, the Expanding Bowl and the Disappearing Packaging for example, and now one of the latest offerings, WikiPearl, is being showcased at a new WikiBar in Paris.

Designed by minimalist Frenchman Mathieu Lehanneur, the café is the first in a proposed chain that would sell the range of edibly-packaged foods. Currently available are ice creams that don’t melt when touched, yoghurts that can be eaten without a spoon and cheeses that don’t need to be wrapped.

The hexagonal pattern used by Lehanneur in both the mirrored ceiling light and under-lit counter are designed to reflect and reference the molecular structure of the food, and the simple design correlates nicely with the story of WikiFoods, proudly told on the shop’s rear wall. Founded by Harvard Professor David Edwards in collaboration with designer Francois Azambourg and biologist Don Ingber, the project was initially developed as a concept to design food that can survive without protective plastic packaging, and the trio are now planning to open another WikiBar in Massachusetts, as well as a series of pop-ups.
