Most of us understand just how frustrating it can be to buy the wrong size or receive your order only to realize that it looks completely different on you than on the model on the website. Thankfully, though, it looks as though this could soon become a thing of the past.

MIT Media Lab alumni Jinha Lee, perhaps better known for inventing interactive floating pixelshas been busy developing an ‘augmented online shopping mall’ that enables its users to see how different items will look on them.

What You Click Is What You Wear‘ uses either a head-mounted or transparent display, along with a 3D graphic of your selected item that is then rendered onto the users body. A depth camera (like a Kinect) attached to the display tracks the user’s movements, while a mobile device held by the user is able to sense their orientation.

While the technology may sound slightly mind boggling to the average shopper, what solidifies this innovative young project as one well worth keeping your eyes on is the super-simple and enjoyable user experience involved. Click a single button on your phone and, in the fraction of a second, there’s a watch on your arm. Looking at the bigger picture and it becomes clear that we may well be knocking at the door of a revolution in mobile retail.
