Set in the heart of Manhattan, in what used to be a station, Park avenue tunnel sits as a efficient route under the city. Now open to pedestrians for the first time ever, artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer adds a twist by transforming the space into an interactive sound and light installation.

By using intercoms placed at the centre of the tunnel, members of the public are able to speak into and alter the auditory environment of the space using their own voice. The sound is looped and pushed outwards whilst also setting off an array of spotlights that mimic the sound wave produced.

Drawing similarities with other sound and vision amalgamating installations like the Sonos Playground and Sonic Water the tunnel is another example of tech based art infiltrating public space.
