The aptly named Shit Museum reinvents society's perception of faecal matter

The provocatively named Museo della Merda, otherwise referred to as The Shit Museum, has just made it’s debut in Castelbosco Farm, Italy.  Embracing all things faecal, the cultural institution marries art and technology, whilst promoting innovative methods of sustainability.

Located in the province of Piaecenza, north Italy, founder and farmer Gianantonio Locatelli set to make the most out of his 2,500 cow’s organic waste. Stepping away from the regular production of Grana Padano, Locatelli has transformed his collection of dung into an ecological and industrial project.

The ground floor of the renovated space hosts conceptual installations, as well as scientific insight into the history of excrement. Exploring the virtual, The Shit Museum will remain a physical space for visitors, but will also expand to an online platform, which allows the public direct interaction with activities, projects and initiatives.

Revisiting ancient observations, faeces is again seen as a window to sustainability, opening opportunities as an alternative energy supply. Ensuring that waste is no longer under-valued, The Shit Museum takes on a new value in the age of Anthropecene. In a similar vein, Growduce developers biologist Aakriti Jain and industrial designer Guillian Graves are combatting society’s throwaway culture with their ecological production of cellulose for consumer use.

The Shit Museum will be open by appointment(tel. +39. 0523787357) on Saturday and on Sunday from May to August 2015
