A group of creatives have created a design performance to represent the symbiosis between humans and technology.

The Valse Automatique is the performance of a KUKA industrial robot modified to translate music into a manufacturing process. Based on the ideas of product designer, Hermann Weiznegger, a large team were chosen to work on the project including designer Stephan Thiel and MIKI, a violinist and music producer. MIKI composed 5 different musical pieces that were used to manufacture 5 wax products sculpted by the Valse Automatique.

The design performance of the robot is set up as a fluid manufacturing process which changes according to music. The process of creating these objects is solely based on the live sound of MIKI's violin playing which the robot translates into physical actions. Split between two stages of design, the first stage is the sculpting of the model which is followed by a finalisation of the product using a bunsen burner which also follows MIKI's music. For both stages, the process is also recorded through a visualisation which further clarifies the performance for audience purposes.

Aside from the original concept idea, Weiznegger's project also creates a striking display of music in its physical form. By marrying the raw display of industrial actions with refined, classical sounds, the Valse Automatique presents an unique perception of human interaction with technology.
