Never lose your shades again with a product that harnesses the mighty power of the sun to speak with your iPhone
Sunglasses are probably the most misplaced items of clothing in the world, and that makes splashing out on an expensive pair a particularly perilous buy. But that could change with a new range capable of syncing to your iPhone and letting you know if the glasses are in danger of being left behind.
Australia’s Tzukuri has set about making a series of sunglasses, available in six designs and three sizes, that automatically connect to an iPhone via Bluetooth. Powered by solar technology, a small chip hidden in the frames speaks to an iPhone every five to fifteen minutes letting it know if the sunnies are in the vicinity. If not, an alert is sent, and just in case a user hasn’t prioritised keeping a watchful eye on the accompanying app then it’s also possible to check the last location where both app and sunnies were together. Notifications are disabled at home.
Each pair is handmade in Japan and feature acetate, polarised UV protective lenses. And as an added bonus, they look alright too.
The glasses should be available soon for $349 - $249 for early adopters – whether that's worth the price of admission for the particularly paranoid remains to be seen.
Conversely, if you’re more worried about your iPhone running out of battery than losing your sunglasses, we’ve also had a look at Shamashades - a Ray-Ban-backed project that allows you to charge your iPhone using your own solar-powered face.
