Charting the 'mood' on Twitter is not new. We've seen it used for geographically measuring happiness at different locations, as well as charting the attitudes towards international events. However we haven't  seen it used to predict the outcomes of award ceremonies before.

This is the Twitter Oscars Index. The system measures the percentage of tweets containing any of the nominees for the top categories and compares what percentage of them seem positive rather than negative.

Whether or not the predictions will ring true come ceremony night, or whether the public mood will have any bearing on the award panel's decision remains to be seen, but it's interesting to see crowd sourced data used in such a accessible, high-profile way.
