Tumblr have been offering a window into a selection of musicians' creative minds, both on their website and in real life. For Tumblr IRL, bands team up with a visual artist to tell the story of their music before inviting fans to see them perform in a unique setting inspired by the art.

One of the stand out collaborations was Julian Gross’ visual expression for TV on the Radio’s hotly anticipated new album Seeds. Multimedia artist Gross, previously of New York dance punk outfit Liars, has served as creative director for the band’s recent release, ensuring that all aspects of design were cohesive.

For Tumblr IRL at Art Basel in Miami, Gross reimagined many of the images he created for the album sleeve, using elephant's tooth paste to create abstract interpretations of themes including infinity, life-cycles growth, death and rebirth.

It seems Tumblr is at the forefront of furthering the exhibition of digital artwork offline. In our latest journal we investigated the key players attempting to increase exposure for digital art, noting how Tumblr’s collaboration with Phillips Auction House for Britain’s first digital art auction is significant in the medium’s history.
