Commissioned by famous art fair Design Miami/ Basel, industrial designer Jamie Ziglebaum has created a spectacular light installation that reacts to visitors’ movements, opening up a conversation between them and the space.

Triangular Series consists of 59 geometrical shapes, very similar to crystals, that hang from the ceiling of the Basel Exhibition Centre, changing their light intensity as people pass underneath. To bring the installation to life, the artist used dynamic color-temperature LED lighting, advanced sensors and custom software and electronics.

With Triangular Series, Ziglebaum wants to explore the concept of entrainment. ”Like the cells in our hearts and the clocks on our walls their rhythms affect each other through the process of entrainment”, according to the project’s page. ”The result is an emergent, undesigned dance of light from the ceiling swarm and triangular projections below.”

Each year Design Miami/ Basel commissions a designer to create a site-specific work that moves beyond traditional production methods, and has the power to engage with the festival’s international audience. Triangular Series made its debut on the 16th of June.
