Tingle is a new take on musical instruments developed by Dutch designer Nupky. The instrument is modelled after the pin-board toys that you may recognise from your youth, but with a different, interactive twist. The visual transformations that occur on the pin-board’s surface are directly translated into music, where every pin has its own individual sound. The idea behind this is that children can use the instrument to literally mould a musical landscape with their hands.

By challenging how traditional instruments have been presented to us in the past, Nupky aims to rethink children's first encounters with music. Because students can directly see how their touch translates into sound, it makes it easier for them to link the two senses together. As a result of this understanding, it's easier for children to learn how to play instruments and understand music.

Tingle was previously exhibited at the Dutch Design Week and the Discovery Festival in Eindhoven. While the initial concept only functioned in collaboration with a webcam, it was recently redesigned into a functioning standalone version.
