Paul Ferragut has developed a DIY printer that takes over 20 hours to print a colour image. The young designer who enjoys delving into interactive design, creative coding and moving image projects, has created a mechanical printing device that uses felt-tip pens and blotting paper. The Time Printing Machine uses Computer Numerical Control systems to create prints. Time-based algorithms relative to the grey value of a pixel calculate how long the felt-tip pen stays in contact with the blotting paper, resulting in different sized spots and gradually forming an entire image. The video above shows the process and pointillist style outcome. Clearly this is not a solution for those of us that don’t have hours to wait for a single print job. Ferragut’s typically unconventional project is designed to expose the lengthy processes involved in printing imagery. It is interesting to see the worlds of mathematics and art combine to create concepts such as this.
