Armed with the same set of materials and tools, a workshop and six hours, graphic design agency CR&D invited 3 furniture makers down to each make a chair.

The X3 installation took place over 3 days at London Design Festival, where each was given a day to create their unique piece. Visitors to the workshop space were able to observe each maker in action; from the design concept stage to the finished production. The three designers applied their individual imagination and creativity to the project, and the construction over each day was additionally streamed live online.

The first day started with recent RCA grad Sam Weller, followed by Alex Hellum, and finishing with Jack Smith. Inside their perspex workshop each maker created a truly original piece – highlighting the difference in their individual styles and techniques. The project is a nice exercise in exploring creative process and inspiration, and how different designers may approach the same problem. The finished chairs are now being auctioned off for charity, so get involved here, and check out the images from the installation below, and the film above.
