Sailing down the River Thames yesterday, to the tune of Rod Stewart’s hit ‘We Are Sailing’ was the world’s first amphibious ice cream truck. Dubbed the HMS Flake 99, after the eponymous British summertime treat, the truck-come-boat was made to mark the beginning of National Ice Cream Week, which runs until Sunday 5th June.

We have David Mounfield, a Brighton-based stand-up comedian to thank for the HMS Flake 99 gracing our murky city waters as this brilliant idea was his winning online competition entry, and was inspired by the increasing number of exclusion zones in the UK for ice cream vans. Who made it happen? The HMS Flake 99 was made possible by Fredericks, the dairy behind Cadbury's ice cream and was part of a greater campaign, Cadbury's Ice Cream Land.  We hear they’d like to take the truck on tours to national beaches,  which would we would love to see - and also to the canals of Venice, to champion British beaches and summertime. Something tells us that won’t be happening.

The HMS Flake 99 wasn’t making any sales during their journey down the Thames, save for a freebie to the River Police, but we love this playful approach and with the sun shining today are we craving an overpriced Flake 99 now? Yes. Job done.
