The dilemma facing office workers trying to find something fresh to eat at lunch may have finally been resolved.

Scaling down the concept of urban farming into something bite-size and digestible, Shanghai based creative Hiroyuki Shinohara has developed a mini office farm using only waste products such as bottle tops and coffee filters. A zero waste project, as it uses only what was already there, sees his ‘Transportable Farm’ transform office spaces into eco territory, challenging our interaction with everyday objects and places.

Radishes grown in soda lids can be easily moved around the office; a drawer can become a small scale incubator, a desk transforms into a temporary farm and plants commandeering the space for their own ‘green purpose’, hijacking the intended functionality of objects and spaces.

His mini farm provides us not only with a small source of organically grown food, but challenges us to think about the possibility of dual roles for our urban spaces.
