The voting app hoping to change the way millennials engage with elections
With the 2015 UK general election looming, many millennials are finding themselves unsure of who to vote for. In the last general election only 51.8% of 18-24 year olds voted, compared with over 70% of over 65’s. Vote Match, an App developed by Unlock Democracy, is aiming to change this by informing undecided voters in a way they feel is intuitive and relevant to their digitally driven lives.
Vote Match a.k.a the ‘Tinder for Politics’ is a quiz app that asks the user a series of questions about political policies or issues about which you can answer agree, neutral or disagree. Upon completion, users are aligned with the political party that most closely matches their responses e.g. 72% aligned with The Greens. According to Vote Match, their app has had a real impact: ‘In 2010, our research suggested that 5% of our users decided to vote as a result of taking Vote Match.’
The use of technology to help increase youth participation is a relatively new concept for politicians, but could come to shape the way politicians engage with millennial voters. In our ever more digitised lives, it seems logical that our political systems are formed in keeping with the technology relevant to our modern lifestyle’s. Read our ‘The Revolution Will Be Digitised’ piece to get a more in-depth view on why so many young people feel disenfranchised by politics in a zeitgeist defined by technology, social media and online interaction.
