The Periscope Project is a design, exhibition and educational space constructed out of disused shipping containers in San Diego. The idea that was first conceived five years ago by award winning architect Petar Perisic who died in 2008, but the project was only recently completed by ENS Projects. The containers include a gallery, educational resources, work and living spaces, and an outdoor performance area in a centralised courtyard. It's free to access and completely open to the local community, encouraging students, professors and artists to interact, learn, generate thoughts and ideas, and embark on new projects together. It's currently being used to host a series of summer workshops for students including classes in photography, filmmaking and critical thinking. Regenerating disused land resources in a city and building collective space is something we are seeing more and more of. Creative hubs like this one, based around a simple concept, are relatively easy to set up and maintain. And with valuable input from local residents, they can evolve and grow over time to suit the needs of the community.
