Australian's take their coffee seriously. When it comes to a piccolo or a flat white, they know what they like, and they know how they like it. It is a market of connoisseurs.

Creative agency Reborn recently helped Breville challenge some of the existing opinions and perceptions around their coffee products with The Naked Espresso, a live data visualisation of each espresso shot.

For the Aroma Festival in Sydney, the team re-engineered one of the Breville machines by hacking and rewiring, to display, through artwork, the real-time individual personality of each shot of espresso. And through this, highlight the technical capabilities and precision of the machine.

Various pressure levels, temperature and flow rate were taken into account, and the animation speed, number of shapes, rotation and position of the artwork were linked with the machine's behaviour during the brewing process. As the customer waited for their coffee they saw the the real-time animation of their personal espresso shot. Casey Reas-esque swirls and patterns of the animation were printed out and attached to each ordered cup, as well as an accompanying summary of the hidden science used to make that carefully crafted shot of espresso.
