The Moss Table
Introducing Biophotovoltiac technology - electricity generated from living moss
There are very few stones we will leave unturned in our quest for sustainable energy, but it's just as well, otherwise we might have missed this idea.
The Moss Table is a conceptual product which demonstrates the potential future application of Bio-Photo-Voltaic technology. BPV devices generate electricity from light energy by exploiting the photosynthesis of living organisms such as cyanobacteria, moss, algae and vascular plants. Currently the table can produce about 520 Joules of energy per day, so in a day the table would produce enough energy to power a laptop for just 20 seconds.
On the plus side, Biophotovoltaics (the creators of the Moss Table) assure us that low-energy consumption laptops are being developed which could operate on as little as 1W, meaning that a plant-powered laptop could be possible in the future. If this is the case the Moss Table could power a laptop for over 14 hours. And if nothing else, moss can do wonders for a room's feng shui.
