Royal College of Art students experiment with the nature of sound in a new exhibition

Launching today as part of a collaboration between the Royal College of Art and Sonos is SoundObject, a student-led exhibition on the relationship between sound, people, objects and their environments. At the centre of the exhibition are questions on the relationship between tastes in music and social structures, as well as the differences in sound depending on the number and relation of those listening. The result of the students’ exploration into sound has been a variety of ‘sound objects’ that mediate relations between people, objects and their environments.

There’ll be seven student projects taking place over three days. Some examples of what to expect include Sonic Motion, a bamboo climbing frame that maps movement into sound, and Sonicbells, a sonified exercise system that can programme group workout sessions into kettle bells to deliver sonic feedback on the extent and nature of the exercise. Along with this, there’s the XOXX Composer, a drum machine that works by attaching magnets to a set of revolving wheels, allowing for different rhythms and fractions of a beat.

SoundObject will be running 14-16 May from 10am to 7pm at Ugly Duck, 47-49 Tanner Street, London SE1 3PL.
