With music production software now easier than ever to access and use, it’s no surprise that virtually every remix has a remix these days. Mashups abound as bedroom producers around the world re-interpret tracks in new, innovative ways.

US-based artist and designer, Miles Polaski, picks up on this notion of instant remixing with his latest sound project, The MASHine, which combines audio and visuals in a manipulatable installation. Presented as a simple box with 42 buttons, (which are assigned to 21 vocal tracks and 21 instrumentals), The MASHine allows users to create mashups on the fly, offering over 400 unique sonic combinations. As the composition changes, so do the visuals, which are projection mapped onto the backdrop beyond.

Although it’s tempting (and perhaps frightening) to think that music composition might have been reduced to the touch of a button, there’s little chance The MASHine is going to be picked up by the pros - the project was created by Polaski as part of the William King Museum’s Artist by Trade exhibition currently taking place in Abingdon, Virginia, until August.
