The Listening Cloud
Ad agency creates a data-driven light sculpture that reacts to clients' social media activity.
Cloud-shaped AV installations and social media responsive sculptures seem to be the norm these days. Now RPA, a Santa Monica-based advertising agency, has combined the two trends to create a fluffy installation that makes their clients’ Facebook or Twitter activity more tangible.
Installed in the agency lobby, The Listening Cloud uses tailor-made software to collect social media data, and coloured LED lights to visualize it in an engaging manner. Red lightning is for Facebook likes, blue is for Twitter mentions, while purple is for Instagram. Also, a user-friendly Web interface allows clients to choose what specific activity they would like the cloud to monitor in real time.
Although The Listening Cloud is only a prototype, together with a DIY video, RPA have made all the design files available for free, so anyone could build their own weather-inspired sculpture.
