It’s about time we had a flag to take with us when we leave Earth

For his graduation project at Beckman’s College of Design in Stockholm, Oskar Pernefeldt set himself a pretty prestigious challenge; to design a flag for planet Earth. His design incorporates visual elements that express elements common to everyone on Earth. A blue background represents the blue planet's water while the seven interlocking rings, inspired by the Olympics logo, are arranged as a flower (a symbol of life) in the centre.

The project is formulated as an official proposal. Pernefeldt suggests the flag should “be used when representing planet Earth, and to remind the people of Earth that we share this planet, no matter of national boundaries. That we should take care of each other and the planet we live on.” Pernefeldt ultimately hopes the flag could be used to colonise Mars in 2025.

For all the talk of how we live in a globalized world, how interconnected all of our lives are, let alone our perpetual endeavours to locate extraterrestrial life, it seems odd that we don't have a flag that represents the entire planet. What better way to express the ‘we not me’ mentality than by a flag that unifies everyone?
