The experimental music duo Matmos released The Ganzfield EP last week, produced through using parapsychological experiments to generate musical scores.

The experiments, based on the concept of telepathy were conducted over four years at their Baltimore home and at Oxford University. Similar to the classic Ganzfield experiment (German for ‘entire field’) research subjects were put in a dark room and deprived of all senses but a red light and white noise in headphones. Matmos then transmitted the concept of the album whilst instructing their subjects to “empty their minds” and describe what they visualised, producing transcripts that were used to make music.

Check out the weird and beautiful end result 'Very large green triangles', reflecting the surreal nature of the experiment. The slow and elaborate process of making the record is interesting in an era when electronic music can be made with a few clicks of a mouse.
