The Tate Collective Liverpool along with Turner prize-winning art and architecture collective Assemble have created Art Gym, a takeover of the Tate Gallery Liverpool.

The average no-frills gym in 2016 is now the domain of those who have made a lifestyle out of healthy living, individuals who seem to be more or less incapable of distinguishing between workouts and their personal lives. Conversation beyond correct nutrition, protein supplements and condescending motivational spiel is beyond these people.

In what feels like a playful subversion of this theme, The Tate Collective Liverpool teamed up with Turner prize-winning art and architecture collective Assemble to create Art Gym, a full-on takeover of the Tate Gallery Liverpool.

The initiative was conceived between Assemble, The Tate Collective and a group of local youngsters. Input from all three led to a series of suggestions of events and workshops they wished to see the gallery take on. The proposals took the form of mischievous "ransom notes".

The space is modelled on a real gym, but rather than coming complete with endless rows of step machines and an intimidating amount of free weights, the locker area, boxing ring and spa will instead be used to host a wide range of free classes and lectures designed to help participants develop existing artistic skills or create new ones.

In a further riff on the gym theme, members of The Tate Collective will patrol the space in their capacity as Art Gym instructors, (like personal trainers), on hand to help develop creative workout plans.

The art gym is available to everyone, no matter their age or ability and runs from March 7th to 31st. Read our Profile on Assemble and their community-driven approach to architecture.
