A common problem for students in Stockholm is the lack of affordable accommodation, with many often being forced to wait in line to be provided with somewhere suitable to live. To make a stand about this, and to offer some kind of solution, housing company AF Bostäder has developed a small, free-standing housing unit – compact in size but with enough room for a kitchen, bathroom, office space and sleeping area.

Currently a prototype, the space is on offer to the student who makes the strongest case as to why they should live in it. Once the best candidate has been selected, they can expect to pay a very modest SKr30,000 ($4,460, £2,840) per year in rent. AF Bostäder hopes that through this project, they can convince the Swedish Housing Authority to become more flexible in their building specifications. And if successful, they will produce a further 100 units for students in the city.

The project not only illustrates the simplicity and efficiency of Scandinavian design, but also addressed the changing nature of today's living requirements.
