Damogen Furies tour to incorporate local weather data for a mind-blowing experience

Unsatisfied with the ubiquity of show visuals in electronic music, Squarepusher, aka Tom Jenkinson, has developed a new way of incorporating local data into the live experience before a tour this October. Jenkinson’s visualisations will not only integrate real-time information from the sound output during the show, but will include inputs from the area’s weather, like humidity, temperature and wind speed, as well.

Already well known for his innovative use of audiovisuals and his ability to take responsibility for technical as well as musical elements, coding for the backdrops to Jenkinson’s shows will typically include instructions to change parameters – such as brightness – according to cues from musical data like peaks in volume.

New visuals, developed for a tour for the recent album Damogen Furies, will include software that takes information from the surrounding area, and use those to control the colour components of the show. Aiming for complete assimilation of audio, visual and environmental factors, each show will be a seamless experience personalised to the city it takes place in.

After the recent 360° virtual reality video for single Stor Eiglass, premiered at Protein Studios, Squarepusher is continually seeking new ways to incorporate advances in technology to both change, and react to changes in the way we experience music. With reports on technology causing a decrease in attention spans the use of more complicated outputs might seem counterintuitive, but what results is complete sensory incorporation that focuses the attention on the music, instead of distracting from it.
