British filmmaker James W Griffiths has won the Nokia Shorts Competition for his short film ‘Splitscreen: A Love Story’, shot entirely using a Nokia N8 smartphone. The thoughtful film, shown as part of the Edinburgh Film Festival last weekend, simultaneously shows the perspectives of two people falling in love. Watch some behind-the-scenes footage here. As video technology in mobile phones continues to become more sophisticated, this competition encouraged contestants to explore the possibilities for viewing and production of film on the mobile phone. Recently we have seen the worlds of art, music, and film brought to our fingertips through mobile technology, with iPhonographers making music videos using apps, as well as artist David Hockney's iPad art. We look forward to seeing how this new medium can create new production techniques in the arts.
