Space Explorer combines large-scale exhibition with the latest smartphone technology, transforming Hackney into an involving outdoor gallery.

The cool white walls of a gallery are in theory perfect spaces to display vivid variants of art. However, they can also feel incredibly sterile, and are more than capable of projecting an air of haughty exclusivity.

Space Explorer is an interactive art platform which could change all of this. The new initiative, which launches May 5th and lasts for eight weeks, combines a GPS dependent app with photography situated outdoors to guide participants around 15 of Hackney's neighbourhoods on an immersive art tour.

The first exhibition, named “Another Space & Time” was created by Space Explorer co-founder Robin Mellor. Its intention is to create a thought-provoking search for answers to the meaning of life via the stories of the people who inhabit the Great American Desert. As well as offering direction, the Explorer app (available on iOS) uses a bespoke soundscape triggered by the immediacy of the artwork to further enhance the experience.

It's hoped that Space Explorer will inject a sense of adventure into the discovery of new art, while also helping those who may have previously found galleries and larger exhibitions intimidating, with an avenue into cultivating their appreciation.

Space Explorer has also created an accompanying free magazine for tourists to carry with them on their journey. Alongside imagery related to the tour, it also contains  inspirational imagery from the VSCO community.
