Artist Sean Raspet and fashion designer Nhu Duong have created conceptual uniforms for Soylent that draw inspiration from the purpose of the nutritionally complete drink.

Sean Raspet, artist and in-house flavour designer for food start-up Soylent, commissioned Berlin-based fashion designer Nhu Duong to create uniforms for Soylent staff. First showcased at Frieze New York ,(with Berlin gallery Société), the resultant collaboration did much to blur the lines between fashion brand, promotion, and installation.

Versatility and efficiency lie at the heart of the enmeshment between drink and clothing. Detachable components, self-cleaning microfibre cloths and a grey colour palette mean the utilitarian uniforms are at once both chic and functional.

In a clear effort to further link the uniforms to the purpose of Soylent, Duong determined that only artificial materials should be used in their construction. This approach is mirrored in the man made chemical compounds Sean Raspet will use to induce taste and flavour in the drink.

Just as Soylent is considered a viable alternative to conventional diets, the uniforms long-term intention is to phase out the traditional, sprawling wardrobe options we’re often confronted with. Whether this is a realistic aspiration or not remains to be seen, but the idea is predicated on the fact that the Earthly materials are finite, and closer to exhaustion than we’re ready to admit. Both Soylent and the commissioned uniformed are being presented as alternatives.

Though the clothing will not be available for general sale, Soylent employees will test out their functionality in their own day-to-day lives. Discover more about Soylent in our feed post.

Another ambitious attempt at cross-pollinated branding came from fashion label Wellness, as they released three accompanying health related drinks as a part of their latest collection.
