For the annual Graduation Show of the Design Academy Eindhoven, Belgian designer Pieter-Jan Pieters developed a technology that interprets body movement and translates it into music. Sound on Intuition taps into the idea that you don’t necessarily have to learn new gestures in order to play an instrument, since your body instinctively feels music.

Once connected to a computer, each of the five devices – Wob, Heart, Scan, Kick, and Finger – acts as a MIDI controller, and can play any sound. The sound can then be adjusted with natural body movements: for a higher note, you just have to reach high; for some rhythm, you only have to tap your finger, and you can change the sound by slightly bending the finger. Moreover, the Heart sensor not only translates your heartbeat into tone, but also matches the tempo of the beat when you listen a song.

While Sound on Intuition has some limitations, it’s interesting to observe a new and more instinctual approach to producing music.
