Earlier this month we featured a project called Makey Makey that turns everyday objects into devices to control computers. Now designer Nilly Keyes is taking this idea even further this his SketchSynth project, and eliminating the need for three-dimensional controls altogether.

SketchSynth lets anyone create their own control panel with just a marker and a piece of paper. Once drawn, the controller sends Open Sound Control (OSC) messages to anything that can receive them; in this case, a simple synthesizer that uses programming software Pure Data. It’s a fun toy that also demonstrates the possibilities of adding digital interaction to sketched or otherwise non-digital interfaces.

We're interested in seeing what controls look like when mapped on preexisting artwork. Suddenly a painting by Pollack turns into the bridge of the Starship Enterprise.
