Shwood: Stone 2013
As far as materials to make a pair of glasses frames out of, stone must be one of the more unconventional.
Unusual materials are always something of a crowd pleaser - we’ve previously looked at chairs from marine plastic waste and pencils using locally sourced waste materials, but this new offering from Shwood takes it back to basics with it’s recently debuted Stone Collection for 2013.
The Portland-based label, more traditionally known for its wooden frames, teamed up with German engineers to form millimetre-thick slices of slate stone to build the striking frames. Each handmade pair is uniquely rugged, yet lightweight, whilst also retaining the timeless style the company is known for. The new collection features two Shwood favourites – the Belmont, with classic panto-shaped frame and keyhole bridge, and the Canby – the label’s flagship model.
The images speak for themselves – Shwood has managed to make a raw and stubborn material into a finely finished masterpiece of craftsmanship and design. Finished with Carl Zeiss lenses imported from Italy, the new collection is sure to catch the eye of any discerning sunglass wearer.
