Shama Shades
Charge your phone on the go with the help of some smart shades that double as solar powered batteries
Now there are sunglasses that do more with sunlight than simply protect you from it. The idea of the Shama Shades was developed by Mumbai designer Sayalee Kaluskar in collaboration with Ray-Ban to help you get more out of your shades. The design is in keeping with the sleek Ray-Ban Wayfarer model, however what makes it interesting is that there are photovoltaic cells, like those used in solar panels, embedded in the material. These are wired into a battery hidden inside the plastic structure of the sunglasses' arm, making it minimally invasive aesthetically, but capable of stroing energy all day. The arm detaches from the frame revealing a microUSB that plugs into an iPhone 5, meaning you can charge it on the go.
Sayalee Kaluskar came up with this idea for a project for Miami Ad School and Ray-Ban decided to back it because, as they say, “nothing is cooler than Ray-Bans on a sunny day and nothing is worse than a dead phone at night!”.
