You may or may not be surprised to hear that every few seconds somewhere in the whole world, two of Spotify’s 40 million users play the same song at the same time.

Surprising or not, this data has been visualised by interactive artist Kyle McDonald (who previously visualised your Twitter feed in Social Soul) for his latest work as media artist in residence at Spotify. Serendipity uses real time data to depict two users who clicked play on the same track within one tenth of a second of each other in different towns, countries, time zones and hemispheres. The artwork zooms in on their locations whilst playing the track they selected before moving onto the next serendipitous track selection.

“Even though listening to music can be a very private experience, I wanted to see how often this experience is shared”, said McDonald. “I’ve heard estimates that half a million people are in airplanes at any moment, forming a sort of city in the sky, maybe Serendipity shows a similar sort of never-ending worldwide music festival.”

Last week we saw another instance of the transient Internet being captured as a work of art. For #oneSecond, Swiss graphic designer Phillip Adrian captured every tweet posted at a particular second and amassed them in a one-off box set to be displayed in art galleries.
