We may talk about food all the time, but do we really know how best to preserve it? Korean designer Jihyun Ryou has challenged our way of storing food with her project 'Save Food from the Fridge'. She believes that we are too reliant on technology and that artificial refrigeration has redefined our relationship with fresh food, leading to excess food and energy waste.

Her eco-friendly solution was the design of a series of 'knowledgable shelves' which help to preserve foods using information that used to be common knowledge. One shelf, for example, is for storing potatoes and apples, a complementary combination due to the way apples emit ethylene gas which prevents potatoes from sprouting. Another shelf holds jars of spices and rice, which helps to prevent rice from absorbing humidity and keeps the spices dry. There's are also shelves designed to hold eggs, root vegetables and fruit vegetables, which are all just as practical.

By putting fresh food on the wall, Ryou's design forces us to actually look at our food and rethink our relationship with waste, highlighting a practical function in an simple, aesthetic way.
