Sam Winston’sBirth-day is a gruesome yet life-affirming snapshot of a waking day, capturing the number of deaths and births in a 12 hour period. Leading with the quote below, Winston uses 70,000 black circles on a white sheet of paper to represent deaths, and 100,000 white circles on black paper to represent life. Wanting to really comprehend the vast figures for something so seemingly unquantifiable, Winston took to pen and paper, but admits he feels no more able to comprehend such a figure, but that now his body holds a memory of the event.

"By the time you‚Äôve read this sentence three people have been born into the world.‚Ä®  By the time you‚Äôve read this sentence two will have passed away.‚Ä® By the time you‚Äôve lived through this twelve-hour day there will be 100,000 more children on the planet. And in the same twelve hours 70,000 people will have died."
