Virtual reality is increasingly influencing both the fashion and music worlds as designers and musicians alike seek ways to work innovative technology into their art.

When Killer Mike and El-P formed Run The Jewels, only staunch fans of each artist could have foreseen the acclaim that met the release of their debut and sophomore albums. The musical literati elevated both artists into a space that saw them certified as the hottest rap duo in America.

Here were two independent veterans who’d managed to find not just a second, but a third and forth wind, (just as their careers were expected to wind down), that they used to craft an album teeming with both conviction and creativity.

Run The Jewels have now released a video which doubles as a virtual reality experience for “Crown”, a single lifted from their second album, “Run The Jewels 2”. Full use is made of the 360-degree frame as various characters appear throughout the video. Appropriately, both Killer Mike and El-P wear VR created crowns.

At present, the virtual reality video can only be accessed via The New York Times NYTVR app which is available for both Android and iPhone users, however, it will be launched on YouTube and Facebook next month.

It’s safe to assume that "Crown" will be the first serving of a stream of content made available via VRTJ, a platform that will also serve as outlet for content such as live performances and material from the Art The Jewels Gallery. Fittingly, Run The Jewels are also releasing a VRTJ cardboard viewer on records day.

Virtual reality is increasingly influencing both the fashion and music worlds as designers and musicians alike seek ways to work new technology into their art in order to better engage with their consumer base and fans. Just last week Balenciaga presented their A/W16 collection via a virtual reality stream.
