With a name deriving from the musical term for an improvised change in tempo by a musical conductor, Rubato is a bluetooth speaker that allows users to control audio factors in an unusually physical manner.  Created by design student Kibbum Park as a part of an exhibition at the Hongik University in Seoul, the hand-held device detects different types of movements and transforms these into gradual changes of three attributes in music. By creating straight horizontal and vertical lines, the volume and pitch can be turned up and down. Additionally, moving the speaker in an angle allows users to control the tempo of the music. The playful movements that dictate this product’s interaction challenge the traditional, static user interactions that are usually associated with remote controls.
