Making the perfect mixtape is an art form. There are a multitude of variables to consider – what tempo do you start with? Does one song segue into the next seamlessly? What about mixing genres?

Roadtrip Mixtapeis a free web app that looks to inject something different into mixtape making. Created for – you guessed it – road trips, once you input your starting point and destination, the app matches Google Maps data with musicians and their hometowns using data from Spotify. Spotify playlists are then created for each leg of your journey.

While the resulting playlists might not be as considered as something you’d put together yourself, it does make for some entertaining, genre-be-damned listening. A journey from London to Manchester, for example, threw up a heady mix of One Direction, Spiritualized, Panjabi MC, Michael Ball and The Smiths. And much like Clerkd, another geo-location based music service, the app could perhaps serve as both a commentary on the areas you pass through and a serendipitous way of discovering new music.
