Disaster Playground is a multifaceted film project exploring the scientific prevention of space catastrophe
Protein are proud to support Disaster Playground, the second documentary film from the award-winning director Nelly Ben Hayoun. In collaboration with entertainment curators Film Buff, the feature film investigates outer space disasters and the real-life procedures that minimalise the risk of an asteroid’s collision with Earth. Envisioning the future deflection of hazardous Near Earth Objects, the immersive feature follows a team of scientists responsible for saving humanity.
“Disaster Playground aims to put the viewer in the shoes of the real actors of Planetary Defence, their choices, their difficulties, their expertise and the complexity of playing with geopolitics and science,” says Ben Hayoun. “Baudrillard’s critical text ‘America’ also frames the film, and it allows space for reflection on the hyperreal culture of catastrophe that we have created for ourselves and the rationale behind it. I hope to engage audiences in this debate.”
The London Premiere of Disaster Playground will be screened at The BFI on June 30th. The Q&A following the screening will be chaired by Guardian Design and Architecture Critic Oliver Wainwright, and director Nelly Ben Hayoun will be joined by Dr Franck Marchis, Senior Planetary Astronomer, SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute.
