Post Code is an interactive installation that takes the information stored in barcodes and turns it into visual and aural art. Designed by Moscow-based multimedia artist ::vtol::, the project comments on barcodes as symbols of consumerism and the digital, virtual age, turning the monochromatic data strips into an audio/visual experience that encourages personal communication.

Combining a barcode scanner with an old photo printer, circuit bent web camera, mono sound system and audio/visual software, the device reads the barcodes of packages it's put in contact with, and responds by producing ‘postal glitch’ print-outs, generated by the digits featured in each scanned code. The futuristic sounds created also correspond with the data. The result, based on stored digital information, is an archaic but ultimately human form of communication; a postcard.
