Plug + Play
A portable new kit that allows musicians to control the lights and sounds at a performance

During a performance, outside of their instrument or choreography, there's only so much a musician can control. Aiming to change this, Neil Merry, a recent graduate of the Royal College of Art, designed Plug + Play, a 'toolkit' that allows performers to control sound and lighting effects by moving their instruments, microphone stands or even themselves. Geared towards the performance of electronic or computer-based music, Plug + Play aims to create a more dynamic environment for both the performer and the audience.
The Plug + Plug kit comes with a series of sensors that attach to various elements of the performance such as the microphone or an instrument, as well as a set of lights. Each sensor moves to a different method of interaction based on movement, whether it is a twist, proximity, or a slam. The sensors feed to a control box that relays changes to speakers and the lights. Plug + Play adds an element of engagement for intimate and small gigs and gives performers a greater element of control in the overall performance.
