Open Sources
French collective Open Sources creates sustainable, energy-producing bikes that can power film screenings.
Comprised of engineering students at the School of Mines in Saint-Etienne, French collective Open Sources has created three bikes that can be used to generate electricity. Recently put to good use at the Curious Travelers Film Festival, the bikes produced enough electricity to power the screening of a 54-minute documentary – with relay teams providing the necessary pedal power.
Whilst electricity-producing bikes aren’t a particularly new innovation, the Open Source bikes are rubbish. Literally. Made from discarded trash, slats from old beds were used for the bikes' seats, whilst old wooden grocery crates and church benches make up the frame.
These bikes aren't just sustainable, they encourage audiences to consume culture in a remarkably novel way. It's an active, low-tech way to enjoy a film that brings physical, social interaction to the fore.
