The one man band of the 21st century is far removed from the pork-pie-hat-wearing-banjo-wielding-drum-on-his-back-vagabond of yesteryear. Loop pedals have made playing multiple instrument parts a relatively slick operation. The only trouble is performances often lack the showmanship and clarity that make for compelling viewing.

Jonathan Sparks, an artist, musician and maker from Brooklyn has created Nomis, a musical instrument with the aim of making loop based music more expressive and transparent through gesture and light. MIDI sounds are selected, played and looped across a light tower that symbolises the different samples. The MIDI sounds are individually coloured for a visual engagement, but also so the audience can reference the different track's movements during the sequencing of the performance.

What’s fascinating about Sparks' creation is its simplicity, Nomis is a spectacular way of featuring looping in an instructive and stimulating way.
