Nimbes is a fully immersive installation that uses laser scans, photography, CGI and projection mapping to transport participants around the world.

Created by audiovisual artist Joanie Lemercier, the installation is currently showing at the Society for Arts and Technology in Montreal. Upon entering, participants are immersed in a panoramic, planetarium-style projection for fifteen minutes – charting star constellations and planets, then moving onto rural locations, dense jungles, volcanoes and mountain ranges, in a sequence that uses images photographed in a myriad of diverse, worldwide locations.

Soundtracked by James Ginzburg, no single application makes Nimbes possible as the projection was created using a combination of varied digital techniques working harmoniously together.

Nimbes is currently being developed to be downloadable and compatible with an Oculus Rift headset, making it portable for the first time. Reminiscent of Bernardo Schorr’s Mixed Reality Living Spaces, Nimbes seeks to transport participants into another world using immersive 360º digital effects.
