Exercise motivation comes in all shapes and sizes, traditionally an impending beach holiday gets most of us round the block a few times in the weeks leading up to it, but for the rest of the year, regimes have a habit of falling by the wayside.

Fitness trackers and their accompanying apps are doing their best to keep us active with a whole host of novel ideas. Amongst others we’ve seen Wokamon -  a virtual pet that starves if you don’t exercise or Run An Empire - an immersive running game that sees you trying to capture virtual territory from your neighbours, however nothing motivates people like getting free stuff.

Therefore Nike has installed a pop-up vending machine called FuelBox in New York that only accepts NikeFuel points as payment. The machine is stocked with Nike hats, socks and T-shirts that can only be purchased with Fuel points that you’ve earned that day. Items start at 500 fuel points with the good stuff going for 1000+ points. The machine will also move between a series of undisclosed locations to keep the hype going. It’ll be interesting to see how rewards for exercising continue to develop as fitness trackers become commonplace as part of the Quantified Self movement.
