The Museum of Broken Relationships is an unconventional project that taps into our inherent nosy nature about the love lives of others. The touring Museum, which originated in Zagreb, Croatia has arrived in London this month and will be taking up residence in Tristan Bates Theatre, Covent Garden until 4th September.   The award-winning idea was conceived six years ago by a couple that had just split up and couldn’t decide how to divide their shared possessions. Since its launch it has invited people from the countries it has visited to submit objects to lament their ended relationships.   Random items such as a garden gnome, an axe and a cast from a broken leg are all on display, alongside text that explains each item. Some messages are sentimental, some angry, some comical and some downright tragic, but all capture the one thing we’re often so reluctant to discuss openly. It’s an interesting twist on the traditional format of museum displays, as the public curates the show itself by donating personal items to be exhibited. Appealing to exhibitionists, those who want to express themselves or those who just want some closure, the open and participative nature of the exhibition and fact it reaches global audiences gives us insight into the hearts and minds of a wide sector of society. These stories are personal, yet universal in their sentiment.
